After the devastating flooding in Steung Treng province, Caritas Cambodia together with Plan International Cambodia, the Provincial Committee for Disaster Management and Steung Treng provincial office brought emergency relief to 438 flood affected families in Siem Pang district, Steung Treng province.

The flash flood comes from the hydropower dam's collapse on Monday, 23rd July 2018 in Attapeu province of Laos, bordering with Stueng Treng province of Cambodia.

According to the rapid need assessment conducted by Plan International Cambodia, the flood affects 3,074 families (15, 315 people) in 17 villages in 4 communes of Siem Pang district, Steng Treng province. 1,289 families were evacuated to safety hill and are facing many problems including lack of food, drinking water, health, other basic needs, and among these, water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and temporary tent are much needed.

Addressed to people at the distribution site, Mr. Kim Rattana, Executive Director of Caritas Cambodia said the relief will be able to ensure that affected families to access to shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and the kit will help to prevent diseases from happening, especially to small children and the elderly people.

The emergency kit includes tents supported by Caritas Cambodia and other relief items supported by Plan International Cambodia including ceramic water filters, water boiler, container with a handle, water drinking mug, water container, nail cutter, mosquito net, sleeping mat, towel, Krama (Cambodian towel) and Sarong.

The distribution of the relief kit took place on 31st July 2018. According to Mr. Rattana, this is the first phase of emergency response and Caritas Cambodia in partnership with relevant stakeholders is committed to assist and support the affected families when need arises. “Caritas Cambodia are grateful to all donors and partners for their support to our emergency relief effort to the flood affected families in Steung Treng province”, said Mr. Rattana.
