Caritas Cambodia Executive Director, Kim Rattana addressed his remark at the groundbreaking ceremony, presided over by H.E.Dr. Nhim Vanda, the First Vice President of National Committee for Disaster Management
Kampong Thom, 27th May, 2015: Senior Minister and the First Vice President of the National Committee for Disaster Management, H.E.Dr. Nhim Vanda and Caritas Cambodia Executive Director, Mr. Kim Rattana presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for two water gates construction project and road renovation of 2,950 meter in Kampong Kor commune, Kampong Svay district of Kampong Thom province.
The two projects are financially supported by Caritas Germany and Caritas Switzerland through Caritas Cambodia.
Kim Rattana, Caritas Cambodia Executive Director said both projects are part of Caritas Cambodia’s disaster management and rehabilitation program to improve the livelihood and sustainability for the disaster affected communities.
Kampong Kor commune is considered one of the most hit area by floods and thousand hectares of rice field and crops were severely affected and damaged when disasters strike.
“I believe that having both OLor and Taduch water gates will improve food security for the poor families. People can do farming in the dry and rainy seasons, therefore, their rice yield and crop production will be increased”, said Rattana adding that “ while a new road is key to facilitate people to easily access to market and public services such as health care, education and other needs”.

Addressing at the ceremony, H.E. Dr. Nhim Vanda, the First Vice President of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) said the water gates and a new road are essential to address the basic needs of the people and will contribute to the development of the communities.

Caritas Cambodia is a key partner with local authority and has worked in Kampong Thom province for many years in implementing many projects namely community development, agriculture, community health, and disaster preparedness and rehabilitation project.

Local people and students welcomed delegation from the National Committee for Disaster Management, Caritas Cambodia and provincial authority
Kompong Svay district governor, Im Thorn, thanked all donors through Caritas Cambodia in supporting the projects. He stressed that other communes nearby will also benefit from the projects. Kompong Kor is one of the 11 communes in Kampong Svay district of Kampong Thom province. There are 1,448 families and 6,871 people of which 3,455 are female. Majority of local people are farmers.

The start of the construction and renovation projects is part of a good collaboration between Caritas Cambodia and NCDM. The projects are expected to finish in late August 2015.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by more than 500 people representing NCDM at national and provincial levels, Caritas Cambodia on behalf of Caritas Germany and Caritas Switzerland, NGOs partners, local people and students.
