Caritas Cambodia and the General Department of Prison of the Ministry of Interior signed a 240, 000 USD agreement on a three- year project on the Comprehensive Prison Health and Vocational Training program (2016-2019).

The official signing agreement was signed by the Director of the General Department of Prison, the Ministry of Interior, H.E. Chan Kim Seng and Mr. Kim Rattana, Executive Director of Caritas Cambodia on Wednesday 20th July 2016 at the Ministry of Interior.

On behalf of the Ministry, H.E. Chan Kim Seng extended his sincere thanks to Caritas Cambodia for the support of the program. Over the past 10 years, he said, Caritas has been provided both soft and hard support in the field of improving the health status of the prisoners through a variety of activities including the construction and renovation of health post, equipment support, counseling, vocational training and human resource. “We are impressed with the achievements we have today and I hope that our collaboration will continue to prosper”, said H.E. Kim Seng.

Addressed at the signing ceremony, Mr. Kim Rattana, conveyed his special thanks to the General Department of Prison and in-line Ministries for their tireless effort and collaboration over the past years. He hoped that continued funding will help improve the health condition of the prisoners. He also believed “the program would provide a life dignity and rebuild hope for the prisoners, especially young prisoners so that they can take up a big role as for individual life, family and the society after their prison term”. Caritas Cambodia is committed to a long-term support of the program, and is planning to integrate mental health program in the prisons in the near future, Rattana shared.

Caritas Cambodia has supported the program since 2005. The official signing agreement was made to further strengthening the program. Under the support of Caritas Spain, Caritas Australia, Caritas Belgium, the three-year project covering a period from 01 May 2016- 30 April 2019 will be carried out in correctional center No 4 and eight provincial prisons of Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, Preah Vihear, Kratie, Steung Treng, Rattanakiri, Mondulkiri and Pailin.

The main objective of the project is to improve the health status and support health needs of the prisoners, and the provision of vocational training skill. Key activities include the supporting of infrastructure needs on the construction and renovation of health post, water and sanitation program, referral service, nutrition support for women and children and so on.

At the end of the ceremony, Caritas Cambodia also handed over a computer and a printer to the General Department of Prison. The ceremony was ended with a joyful moment.
