First day at Caritas office during their orientation of the program

“We are excited to come to Cambodia and we hope that we will try our best and make use of our knowledge and skill in supporting the programs and communities we work with”, said Matthieu Carrière, team leader of a new volunteer group called “Kampuchea Sourya 2015”. Matthieu said it is also an opportunity for the group to discover what Caritas is doing in Cambodia in terms of development and humanitarian work.
The volunteerism program is a joint initiative between Caritas Cambodia and Caritas France (Secours Catholique).
The program offers an opportunity for students in France to share their knowledge, experience and skill with local people in Cambodia. In addition, they will gain experience from field work and explore the life of local people of their challenges, joys and other cultural aspects, particularly among the poor population.

This year, 13 new volunteers join the group. All of them are mixed up of nationalities: 8 French, 2 Brazilian, 1 Moroccan, 1 Spanish and 1 Italian. The new group is assigned to work in Caritas’s programs for a period of one month (11 July-12 August). They are divided into four groups in four program locations: Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, Battambong and Kandal province. Asides from field work which include integrated farming activities, supporting the construction of physical infrastructures, participating home gardening activities, attending regular meetings with people and local authority and other development activities, volunteers will provide English class to Caritas staff.
Sarah, one of the group members expressed her excitement coming to Cambodia. She said it is an opportunity for her to experience another culture and gain broader understanding of development work. “I commit to help local people as much as I can do. I like to work in the field” Sarah emphasized. She added that she has learnt something about the country in terms of history, tradition and culture.

Caritas Cambodia organizes a one week Khmer language class for the new group. This is part of an orientation program which is essential for them to communicate with local people they work with.

Upon arrival at the four program locations, all volunteers will receive a warm welcome and attend an orientation session led by their respective program managers who will present the details of the activities they are going to get engaged during their stay.

At the end of the program, they will have to submit a final report and attend a reflection day with Caritas Cambodia team.

Since 2002, Caritas Cambodia in collaboration with Secours Catholique has offered an opportunity for students in France to get involved in Caritas Cambodia’s field work and get engaged with community lives.
